Understanding Strokes Gained Putting
Strokes Gained Putting reflects your performance for all putts. It compares the actual number of putts taken to the expected number of strokes to hole out based on the initial distance to the pin.
We have previously introduced Mr. Scratch as our benchmark golfer. The data that Arccos has allows us to compare your putting from all putting distances to Mr. Scratch. For example from 3 feet Mr. Scratch will take 1.073 putts and from 10 feet 1.686 putts. Without benchmark data, we would be unable to provide feedback in the form of a putting handicap.
Using the data points above, if you were 10 feet away from the flag and took 2 putts you would have lost 0.314 strokes against Mr. Scratch, meaning that your putting was worse than a 0 handicap golfer. The calculation is below:
No. of putts Mr. Scratch would take from 10 feet (1.686)
LESS
Two putts (2.000)
=
Strokes Gained Putting (-0.314)
Meaning that your putting in this instance was 0.314 strokes worse than Mr. Scratch.
