Understanding Strokes Gained Chipping
Strokes Gained Chipping reflects your performance on shots taken within 50 yards (45 meters) of the green, excluding shots from greenside bunkers and putts. Individual putts taken from off the green may be tagged as chips, in which case they will impact Strokes Gained Chipping rather than Strokes Gained Putting.
How Strokes Gained Chipping works
Understanding how Mr. Scratch performs within 50 yards of the flag from off the green allows us to benchmark your data. For example, Mr. Scratch will average 2.581 strokes from 30 yards short of the flag (when in the fairway) and will average 1.480 putts when putting from 7 feet.
If you were 30 yards away from the flag and chipped to 7 feet you would have gained 0.101 strokes against Mr. Scratch, meaning that your chipping was better than a 0 handicap golfer. The calculation is below:
No. of strokes Mr. Scratch would take chipping from 30 yards (2.581)
LESS
The chip shot (1.000)
LESS
No. of putts Mr. Scratch would take from 7 feet (1.480)
=
Strokes gained for the shot (+0.101)
Meaning that the tee shot was 0.101 strokes better than Mr. Scratch.
If you were able to maintain this level of chipping performance then your Arccos Chipping Handicap would be approximately +2.5.
